Why do people say that under the new covenant we don't have to follow the 10 commandments?

I understand doing away with the ritualistic and sacrificial things after Jesus's sacrifice, but I don't understand how the 10 commandments could be done away with? Like idolatry, adultery, murder, stealing, coveting, etc...how can these not be important any more?
