Homemade electronic game board?

I would like to know what sensors are best for determining unknown pieces within a 64-cell board. Unlike electronic chess, the system does not know the order of placement of the pieces from the start therefore the pieces must identify themselves to the system. What I already know that is good for this is the hall effect sensor where i can vary the magnetic field to vary the output voltage. Please suggest other options.Thank you!
