Why did the Senate Majority Leader deny both Jim DeMint and Rand Paul their desired spots on committees?

McConnel actually isn't the majority leader, Sen. Reid is. If McConnell had his way though, I think he would still probably deny them the spots. Rand Paul beat McConnel's pick at the help of Jim Demint! why help either of them when they didn't help him!
