Why do companies hire engineering interns ?

Engineering Intern programs are so that companies can find good new college grads to hire. It is really a long extended interview. You should show some initiative and either ask for some work, or figure out what your engineering group is doing, do some research on it and write a report for your boss. Do something, anything, don't just sit there for weeks and wait to be told what to do.
