Why does he cry? Is it strange?

I am moving away and he is a married manager/supervisor of sort. He is more like a coach who helped me in completing a massive assignment. I was an intern at this company, and although I've been with this company for about 5 years and have known him, we directly started working together maybe 6 months back. Like I said, he was more of a trainer and so I met him maybe 1 or 2 a week. Lately, since the assignment was close to submission, we interacted a lot more. During this time, he got to know more about me and was like a father figure. Now I'm leaving the company and moving away. He has cried on two occasions, including today when we were talking about my moving. He then apologized about it in an email and said that he has never done this. My question is - is this normal? Whats going on here? What do you think?
